Fire Destroys Sparta Home, Burns for Hours

No one was hurt as early-morning blaze guts vacant Rocky Terrace residence undergoing renovations.

A vacant Sparta home undergoing renovations was destroyed in an early-morning fire Tuesday.

There were no injuries in the Rocky Terrace blaze that broke out just before 5 a.m. Tuesday and took about five hours to be placed under control.

Area residents woke up to the "bright glow of the fire and the heavy smell of smoke that had completely engulfed the home," Police Sgt. John-Paul Beebe said.

The fire generated multiple 911 calls and could be seen from the other side of Lake Mohawk, Beebe said.

The Sparta Fire Department was assisted by members of the Newton, Andover, Ogdensburg and Jefferson departments.

Sparta Detective Keith Hannam along with Sussex County Fire Marshal Joseph Inga and detectives from the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the blaze.
