Fugitive Caught on Camera Charged With Burglary

Police have found and charged a man they believe was caught on camera in a home surveillance video earlier this month and learned he also is a fugitive in Warren County.

At noon June 5, an off-duty Hopatcong police officer noticed a vehicle matching the description of a car in a surveillance video driving slowly on Leo Avenue, Lt. Thomas Kmetz said. The video had captured a person who authorities suspected of breaking into a Hopatcong home at 12:15 p.m. May 30.

Officer Tim Sutphen stopped the vehicle on Lakeside Boulevard and noticed Peter Baglio, 38, of Hackettstown in the passenger seat, Kmetz said. After an identification search, Sutphen learned Baglio had a no-bail warrant out of Warren County and subsequently arrested him, Kmetz said.

When Baglio was moved to the patrol car, Sutphen noticed the man trying to hide a cellophane wrapper with five folds of suspected heroin, Kmetz said. Baglio was charged with possession of heroin at that time and lodged in Sussex County Jail.

The driver of the vehicle, who police have not identified, was questioned at Hopatcong Police headquarters about the May 30 burglary, Kmetz said. When Baglio was questioned separately about the burglary, he refused comment and chose to speak with an attorney, Kmetz said.

For the next week, while Baglio remained in jail, Hopatcong police identified residents who knew Baglio and identified him as the man walking in the surveillance video, Kmetz said, and on Tuesday he was charged with the crime.

Hopatcong police also worked with New Jersey State Police and found three separate warrants out for burglaries against Baglio.

His bail has been set at $160,000.
