'Google' Heroin Bundles Found on Traveling Duo, Cops Say

Cops find 48 bags of heroin during seat belt traffic stop on Rt. 15.

A routine traffic stop led Sparta police to find dozens of heroin bags in a car on Sunday, resulting in two arrests.

Just after 1 p.m., Cpl. Marc Rubino stopped a Toyota Corolla on Rt. 15 when he saw the driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt, Sgt. John-Paul Beebe said. While speaking with the driver, Stephen Smith, 33, of Bushkill, Pa., and his passenger, Sammy Rojas, 40, of Bayonne, Rubino was given conflicting stories of the duo’s destination and departure, Beebe said.

Rubino could see inside the car various pieces of suspected drug paraphernalia, “consistent with someone who injects heroin,” Beebe said. Rubino noticed small rubber bands and multiple cotton balls, some of which were bloodied, Beebe said.

Smith then gave Rubino consent to search the vehicle, and that’s when the officer discovered two torn and empty bags used to store heroin with the name “Google” on them, Beebe said. Under the front passenger seat another 48 bags of heroin with the same “Google” stamp were found, Beebe said.

Rojas was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. Smith was arrested and charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and failure to wear a seat belt.
