Hopatcong FD Issues Summer Safety Tips

Protect your family with these simple rules.

The Hopatcong fire department wants you safe. With the first day of summer behind the borough, keep these tips from Chief Mike Rahill in mind.

  1. Make sure all grills propane or charcoal have been thoroughly cleaned to avoid the incidence of a grease fire.
  2. Inspect all hoses which connect to the propane tank for cracking. If cracks are visible have them replaced immediately.
  3. Operate all grills away from the home and not against any walls of the residence or under any decks or awnings. Grill fires can quickly become structural fires in these cases.
  4. Operate all outdoor fireplaces and chimney's away from the structure and off of any wooden decks. Place these items on masonry or asphalt whenever possible. Also make sure they are level so that they do not tip over.
  5. Do not overload outdoor fireplaces and chimneys and have a screen or spark arrester on all openings.
  6. Clear any gutters of leaves and twigs as sparks from grills, chimneys and outdoor fireplaces can often travel and lodge themselves in the leaves, causing a fire.
  7. Due to the dry and hot summer months which often bring brush fires, clear any brush, leaves, foliage or plantings, several feet from any structures to help prevent the spread of wildfires.
  8. When operating any type of gas lawn equipment, always store fuel in approved containers and out of the sun. Never place these containers on vehicle interior carpets or bedliners as a static spark may occur and cause an explosion.
  9. Also never leave fuel, additives or empty and half full fuel containers in sunlight as they may ignite due to the heat.
  10. Leave fireworks to the professionals. Often areas of our town are to congested with homes very close to one another and an abundance of brush all around. If you want to see fireworks, go to a show and don't put you and your neighbors at risk.
