Hopatcong Gets $130K Ambulance

Bigger cabin, energy-saving features highlight addition.

Hopatcong's ambulance squad received a welcomed addition.

The squad ditched two ambulances that were each about 40 years old after it received a $130,000, top-of-the-line truck in February. The squad displayed it last Wednesday, showing it off to the mayor, council and general public.

The new ambulance's biggest draw: its larger cabin, three-year member Dan Rodriguez said.

"It's a lot more spacious now," he said. "It just makes our job so much easier and allows us to get where we need to be."

Rodriguez said the new ambulance also provides a smoother ride and saves more energy. In addition, it has updated features, like cameras in the back so drivers can more clearly see where they're driving.

"Hopefully that means a lot less dents," Rodriguez joked.

He also said the squad paid for the ambulance mostly through a grant.

The Hopatcong ambulance squad has 24 volunteers and eight paid members. The volunteers work from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. during weekdays and on weekends. They're also available during weekdays for backup.
