Hopatcong Infant Dies From Faulty Recliner

8-month-old girl is the sixth to die while buckled into a Nap Nanny.

An 8-month-old Hopatcong girl is the sixth baby to die from a faulty infant recliner, according to a federal consumer agency.

The Hopatcong child, who was secured by a belt, was found partially hanging over the side of a Nap Nanny recliner, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The girl died from being trapped between the recliner and the crib bumper, the report said.

The death was the sixth involving the product, which was voluntarily recalled last year after the CPSC filed a suit in 2012 against the now-defunct business, Baby Matters LLC of Berwn, Pa.

There were at least 92 incidents involving the Nap Nanny or Nap Nanny Chill between 2009 and 2013, according to the CPSC.

The product has caused babies to get trapped between the recliner and the crib bumper by partially falling out or hanging over the side and infants have suffocated on the inside of the Nap Nanny, according to the CPSC.

While these items are no longer available for purchase in stores, the CPSC advises parents to stay away from them at garage sales or as second-hand gifts.
