Hopatcong Man Accused of Attacking Cops

A Hopatcong man resisted arrest and assaulted cops after responding to a reported disturbance on Windsor Avenue early morning Sunday, according to .

Police charged Daniel Walthour, 45, with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, as well as resisting arrest and obstruction after Walthour also allegedly needed five officers to detain him once he was at police headquarters.

Police said Officer Gerald Mancuso and Lt. Robert Unhoch responded to a home on Windsor Avenue at 1:14 a.m. on Sunday after a report of a disturbance. Police said when they arrived, Unhoch went inside and Mancuso spoke to Walthour outside. Police said they could smell alcohol on Walthour's breath.

Police said when Walthour opened his front door, he told Unhoch to get out of his house. Mancuso told Walthour to stay outside with him, but Walthour went into the house and toward Unhoch aggressively, police said.

Police said they placed Walthour under arrest, but he resisted. Unhoch and Mancuso wrestled him to the ground to try to handcuff him, but he was able to get back up, according to police. The two officers again brought him to the ground and were able to handcuff him, police said.

Police said Unhoch sustained injuries to his ribs when they fell, and that Mancuso sustained an injury to his back. They also said Walthour sustained an injury to the side of his face.

When police took off Walthour's handcuffs at the station to handcuff him to the prisoner bench, police said he asked them "are you ready for fun?". Police said it took five officers, including two from Stanhope, to get Walthour handcuffed to the bench because he resisted them. 

Unhoch and Mancuso were taken to Saint Clare's Hospital in Denville for evaluation and were later released, police said. Walthour refused medical treatment after an ambulance was called to evaluate him, police said. He was held on $10,000 bail, and was released to a family member after 10 percent was posted.
