UPDATED: Indictment: Couple Stole $15K from Soccer Club

Grand Jury indicts Matthew Simon and Stacey Siegel, accused of taking from Hopatcong Hawks.

A Grand Jury on Aug. 11 indicted a Hopatcong couple authorities believe stole $15,000 from a borough youth soccer club, the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Matthew Simon, 37, and Stacey Siegel, 35, were charged with third-degree theft and conspiracy to commit theft.

The charges, investigated by Hopatcong Det. Larry Shaver and Sussex County Prosecutor's Office Det. Dean Voris, allege Simon stole the money from the Hopatcong Hawks soccer club while serving as its president from September 2009 through October 2010. Siegel is the club's former treasurer.

Police said the couple brought their children to California in April 2010 and purchased airline tickets, hotel accommodations, a car rental and gas and made several ATM withdrawals using Hopatcong Hawks funds.

Sussex County Assistant Prosecutor Rachelle Jones didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

In May, public defender Kevin McLaughlin said he needed time to review or evidence, the state had provided.

Current Hopatcong Hawks President Mike Turnage in January.

The pair are expected to be arraigned within six weeks, the prosecutor's office said.
