The Hopatcong resident killed Thursday when a large tree fell through his Maxim Drive home has been identified as 74-year-old Frederick Dalton.
According to Lt. Thomas Kmetz, Dalton was killed when the tree fell through his roof while he was sitting in a chair on the second floor at about 3 p.m. Thursday.
Officers used a ladder and crawled through a back upstairs window to try to find the homeowner and discovered a kerosene heater in the second-floor living room that ignited when the tree fell through the roof, Kmetz said.
One of the officers put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, and as they were searching for the homeowner, found two dogs that were unharmed, Kmetz said.
The officers eventually found the man who was trapped beneath the tree and part of the roof, according to Kmetz. A tree cutting crew needed to respond in order to pull the man's body from the debris, Kmetz said.
One of the police officers was treated and released from Dover Hospital with inhalation from the smoke and chemicals from the fire extinguisher.
