Hopatcong OEM: Safety Tips When Losing Power

Hopatcong OEM says to call power company first, and to make sure generator runs outside home.

The Hopatcong Office of Emergency Management released a statement with some safety precautions to take if residents are without power when Hurricane Sandy hits.

The OEM says to notify the power company first by calling 1-888-544-4877 or by using the website www.firstenergycorp.com.

If residents experience lost power for more than 12 hours, the OEM says to call them at 973-810-8346.

The statement said residents who are running generators should have it located outside of their homes. If anything on the property can be blown away, they ask to secure it for the safety of the homeowner and nearby residents.

Once the storm is active, the OEM says they'll have somone answering at 973-810-8346 at all times and will try to correct any issues as quickly and safely as posisble.

If a resident experiences an emergency and needs to get in touch with the Hopatcong Police, call the police at either 973-398-500 or 911.

Sparta Police said they'll have up-to-the-minute weather information and udpates on their Facebook page.

Sparta residents can also sign up for the Honeywell Instant Alert System and use reverse 911 for emergencies.
