JCP&L: 3K Still Without Power in Hopatcong

Pre-Halloween storm drops more than 10 inches on borough.

UPDATED 5:41 p.m.: has been declared a warming center. From the borough's website: "Bring personal items and bedding if you wish to stay overnight. Fire and CERT personnel will be there to assist.  If you know of someone who could benefit from this shelter, please advise them directly or contact the Police Department at 973-398-5000 and provide the contact information."

JCP&L hasn't seemed to have made much of an impact on those in Hopatcong without power. The power company says 3,651 are still missing electricity in the borough.

UPDATED 11:50 a.m. Sunday JCP&L released this message to the Newton area late Saturday night: "JCP&L continues to experiencing (sic) power outages due to sever weather in our service territory. Crews are working around the clock to restore power to all the affected areas. It will be well into the coming week before the majority of customers are restored. Please treat all downed wires and damaged electrical equipment as live and dangerous. If you have not already reported your electric service as being out, please call 1-88-544-4877."

UPDATED 11:41 a.m. Sunday And the number grows. JCP&L is reporting 3,646 customers without power in Hopatcong as of this post. Hopatcong schools just announced they'll close due to power outages on Monday. As for the county, more than 40,000 JCP&L customers are reporting loss of power.

UPDATED 12:13 a.m. JCP&L is reporting more power outages as of this post. There were 3,101 Hopatcong customers without electricity, according to the company's outage map.

Outages have been reported throughout the borough, from Kynor Avenue to Florance Street to Durban Avenue. "Maxim Drive is out and we are not having fun anymore," borough resident Lori Johnson said on Hopatcong Patch's Facebook page. The Quick Chek on Lakeside Boulevard was also reported at one point to have lost power.

And that's not all.

Downed trees have been spotted throughout the borough. Branches under the weight of heavy snow have snapped and lay on some streets. The Hopatcong DPW has been out throughout the afternoon clearing roads.

JCP&L is also reporting 2,843 outages in Andover and 3,289 in Stanhope. Sussex County has more than 31,000 JCP&L residents missing power as of this post with Newton (6,944) and Sparta (4,292) with the most.

UPDATED 9:52 p.m. The number of Hopatcong residents without power is rising, according to JCP&L's power outage map. There were 3,082 customers without electricity as of this post. Hopatcong Department of Public Works vehicles have been out all afternoon and night clearing roads. And, as you're probably aware, Gov. Chris Christie has announced a state of emergency.

A pre-Halloween snowstorm has knocked out electricity for 3,062 Jersey Central Power & Light customers in Hopatcong, according to the power company's outage map as of 7 p.m. Saturday.

The storm, which has dropped at some places 10 inches of snow on the borough, has picked up throughout the day. The weight of the snow has also snapped limbs of trees and bent others.

More than 27,000 JCP&L customers in Sussex County were without electricity. In Newton, 5,695 customers were missing power while there were 2,049 outages in Andover.

Statewide, more than 50,000 JCP&L customers have lost power.
