Man Gave Teen Boy Alcohol, Gifts in Exchange for Sex, Prosecutor Says

Phillipsburg resident charged with sexual assault by Morris County authorities for alleged crimes in the 1990s.

A Philipsburg man has been charged with second-degree sexual assault for crimes that allegedly took place in the late 1990s, Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp announced Wednesday.

Barry Miller, 42, is accused of engaging in “multiple acts of oral penetration” between February 1996 and February 1998 with a teen boy, Knapp said. The alleged victim was between the ages of 13 and 14-years-old during that time.

The alleged victim told authorities he would be given alcohol and gifts in exchange for the sexual favors, Knapp said.

Miller was arrested Tuesday, April 15 and transferred to Morris County, First Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Zelante said. Bail was set at $75,000 with no 10-percent option, set by Judge Maritza Berdote-Byrne.

Miller is prohibited from having any contact with the victim and may not be near anyone under the age of 16 without supervision as a condition of his bail.

Anyone with information relating to these charges is urged to contact Detective James Bruno at the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Endangerment Unit at 973-285-6200.
