Man Sold Stolen Copper for $1,900, Cops Say

A Stanhope man stole copper piping from homes in Hopatcong and Mt. Arlington, then sold it for cash, according to Lt. Thomas Kmetz.

Sometime around October 2012, Michael Kaloudis, 24, entered three locked homes–two in Hopatcong and one in Mt. Arlington–and cut copper from pipes in the residences, Kmetz said.

A home on Maxim Drive in Hopatcong leaked home heating oil into Bear Pond after Kaloudis cut the piping, Kmetz said. The home on Lakeside Boulevard flooded when Kaloudis cut the piping from there, Kmetz said.

Kaloudis allegedly took 80-feet of copper piping from the home in Mt. Arlington, Kmetz said.

Kaloudis then brought the stolen metal to C&M scrap yard in Dover, where he received $1,931.34 for the goods, Kmetz said.

The Stanhope man was charged with theft and lodged in Sussex County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail from Hopatcong and $25,000 bail from Mt. Arlington.
