Mice Possible Cause of SUV Fire, Cops Say

Vehicle burst into flames Friday afternoon on Stone Avenue.

An SUV covered in snow that hadn't been driven recently burst into flames Friday afternoon on Stone Avenue, Hopatcong Police said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it appeared mice may have chewed through hot wires that shorted out, according to Lt. Thomas Kmetz.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. Friday and was placed under control within 20 minutes. There was no key in the ignition and no one was around when the vehicle caught on fire, Kmetz said.
