Pair Caught With 48 Bags of Heroin During Traffic Stop, Cops Say

Sussex County residents face drug charges following stop in Hackettstown Tuesday night.

Two Sussex County residents were found with 48 bags of heroin during a motor vehicle stop Tuesday night in Hackettstown, police said.

Steven Howell, 30, of Hopatcong, and Caroline Dimartino, 23, of Sussex, were each charged with possession of 48 bags of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic needle, Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

Howell, who originally gave the name of Thomas Howell to officers, was also charged with hindering apprehension, being under the influence of heroin, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, failure to exhibit a driver's license, having a suspended license, having an expired driver's license, failure to give a proper turn signal and having a break light out.

The traffic stop for an equipment violation was made on East Plane Street at about 8:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Dimartino was released pending a court appearance. Howell, who was wanted in Morris County for a probation violation, was unable to post $7,500 bail and was lodged at the Warren County Correctional Facility.
