Police: Drunk Driver Had Open Beer Bottle, Metal Knuckles

The following arrest information was supplied by the Hopatcong police department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Budd Lake man drove drunk with an open beer bottle and metal knuckles in his car, police said.

Keith McIntire was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, having  an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, following too closely to a car and having prohibited weapons and devices on June 19.

Police said McIntire tailgated a patrol car on Sparta Road. When an officer pulled McIntire over, police said, McIntire apologized because he didn't know it was a patrol car.

Police said McIntire's breath smelled of alcohol and, after he failed field sobriety tests, a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol content of .13 percent, or .05 over the legal limit.

Police said an open beer bottle was in the backseat of McIntire's car along with a set of metal knuckles. Police said McIntire told them the metal knuckles were a gift from an ex-girlfriend. He said he hadn't ever used them, and didn't plan to.
