Police: Drunk Man Crashed, Tried Leaving Scene

The following arrest information was supplied by the Hopatcong police department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Hopatcong man drove drunk into a rock wall and tried leaving the scene, police said.

Andrew Besemer was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and failure to maintain lane.

An officer responded to a report of a car accident on Indian Trail after which the motorist tried driving away, police said. Bessemer said he was driving home when he hit a rock wall, police said.

An officer could smell the odor of alcoholic beverages on Bessemer's breath, and that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot, police said. Bessemer, who admitted to having a couple of beers, failed field sobriety tests, police said.

A witness said Bessemer continued traveling down the road after hitting the rock wall until coming to a stop, police said.

Bessemer was processed and released to his daughter, police said.
