Blaze Guts Sparta Home, Causes No Injuries

Police are investigating the cause of Sunday's fire on Byron Place.

No one was injured, but a Sparta home was destroyed, according to Sparta Township Police. An investigation is underway into an early Sunday afternoon structure fire on Byron Place in Sparta that gutted a two-bedroom residential ranch.

At about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, multiple 911 calls from neighbors reported a blaze that completely engulfed the Byron Place home as fire fighters arrived on scene.

The Sparta Township Fire Department along with Andover Township and Ogdensburg companies fought together, with backup provided by the Jefferson and Milton Township Fire Departments. Ultimately it took more than an hour to knock down the fire and several more to make the area safe again, according to Police Sgt. John-Paul Beebe.

The residence was not occupied at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries, Beebe said. Early police reports said the structure was a rental home, but new information indicates the house belongs to a Sparta family.

Det. Sgt. Terrence Mulligan of Sparta and detectives from the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident.
