Prospective Buyers Caught Touring Home in Middle of the Night, Police Say

Neighbor alerted police that several people were inside vacant home with flashlights at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.

Prospective buyers of a vacant Dumont Avenue home decided to let themselves in and check the place out using flashlights in the middle of the night last week, Hopatcong Police said.

An alert neighbor notified police of the suspicious activity at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.

Officers found several people inside and they claimed a Juba Realty Team agent gave them permission to enter the home, Kmetz said. The realtor was called and at first denied granting them permission and then admitted to leaving the back door open for them, Kmetz said.

The listing agent from Realty Executives said no one should be inside the home without a realtor, Kmetz said. The listing agent planned to report the realtor who left the door open, Kmetz said. The prospective buyers were escorted off the property.

"Thank you to the neighbor that called this in. Seeing flashlights in any home at night is very suspicious," Kmetz said. "Do not assume it could be something good.  Assume it is something bad and call us."
