Quick Chek Thieves Plead Guilty to Robbery, Hitting Gas Attendant With Car

Brian Howell and Steven McCabe robbed a Quick Chek employee of nearly $300 and ran him over while trying to get away.

Two men who robbed a Hopatcong convenience store and ran over a gas station attendant during their getaway in 2012 pleaded guilty last month.

Brian Howell, 26, of Hopatcong, pleaded guilty on Jan. 30 to second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault by auto before Judge James Critchley. Steven McCabe, 21, of Budd Lake, pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery.

The pair was charged with the April 2012 robbery of a Quick Chek gas station attendant. They stole nearly $300 from the man and then ran him over while fleeing the scene, police said.

The two were later caught in Paterson driving the vehicle, which sustained a smashed windshield, and were indicted in January 2013.

McCabe is scheduled to be sentenced on March 14 and Howell will be sentenced on March 21.
