A Sparta man was killed Sunday morning when he was struck by a vehicle on Rt. 287 in Bernardsville, shortly after his car collided with another.
Salvatore Sarrecchia, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash that occurred in Bernardsville when he was hit by an SUV while standing in the roadway, New Jersey State Police said.
Sarrecchia exited his vehicle while his wife, Nicole, 39, remained inside after the couple’s Mercedes-Benz collided with a BMW driven by Calvin Luk, 25, of Mendham, police said.
While traveling northbound on the interstate highway just after 2 a.m. Sunday, Luk lost control of his car, which ran off the road and struck the left guardrail. Luk’s car ricocheted, traveled across the highway, and struck the right side guardrail before coming to rest in the center lane.
Unable to avoid Luk’s car in the center lane, Sarrechia struck the BMW and his car stopped in the center and left lanes. Sarrechia exited his vehicle, police said, and was struck by a Chevy Tahoe driven by Lawrence Lynn, a police officer with the state Human Services department.
Luk was charged with driving while intoxicated. The accident is still under investigation and additional criminal charges are pending, police said.
Nicole Sarrechia is listed in stable condition at Morristown Medical Center with minor injuries, and Luk is also listed in stable condition there with an ankle injury, police said.
