Sparta Police Caution Drivers of High Snow Mounds

Several accidents have occurred near intersections the past few days.

Sparta Police are advising motorists to use more caution, especially with high snow mounds and icy conditions, after several motor vehicle accidents the past few days at township intersections.

Motorists involved in the recent crashes have claimed their sight was restricted by the high mounds of snow, according to Sgt. John-Paul Beebe. However, "this is not an affirmative defense when entering an intersection that is regulated by a stop sign, Beebe said.

The Sparta Department of Public Works has continued to remove snow from these intersections, but despite long hours, they have not been able to keep up with the hundreds of intersections in town, Beebe said.

"With all this in mind, the Sparta Police urge all our motorists to travel at safe and prudent speeds through out the township, mindful of poor road conditions," Beebe said. "Also be aware of pedestrians forced to walk in the roadways because of the highly piled snow and neighbors who continue to work near or on the road trying to keep their driveways clear."
