Sussex Pair Arrested After Route 15 Motor Vehicle Stop

Three syringes found in vehicle and driver had suspended license, police said.

Two Sussex County women were arrested following a motor vehicle stop on Route 15, Sparta Police said.

Jennifer Vanhouten, 33, of Newton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of syringes. Gennifer Martin, 37, of Sparta, was charged with driving while suspended.

According to Sgt. John-Paul Beebe, Officer Daniel Elig was observing northbound Route 15 traffic at about 7 a.m. on July 6 when he saw a Jeep Cherokee driven by Martin, whom he knew to have a suspended license.

Elig stopped the vehicle and the two occupants gave conflicting stories of where they were coming from, Beebe said.

Elig was granted voluntary consent to search the vehicle and found three illegal hypodermic syringes in the glove compartment, Beebe said. Vanhouten took ownership of the needles, Beebe said.

The women were arrested and transported to police headquarters and later released on their own recognizance.
