Cops: Man 3 Times Over Limit Drove Friend's Car Off Road

Both men face charges for single-vehicle accident on Route 94 near Hardyston Township border.

A Morris County man was three times the legal limit when he crashed his friend's car on Route 94 near the Hardyston Township border, Sparta Police said.

Sean T. Kaiser, 32, of Lincoln Park, was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, driving while suspended, driving without a license, failure to keep right and several documentation violations.

Dustin Shafton, 32, of Vernon, was charged with allowing someone under the influence to drive his car, according to Sgt. John-Paul Beebe.

Police were called to the scene for a report of a vehicle that had run off the road at about 6:40 p.m. on Oct. 13. Officers found a heavily damaged 2007 Subaru that belonged to Shafton, but was driven by Kaiser, Beebe said.

Shafton suffered a large contusion to his forehead as a result of the accident, according to the police report.

The investigating officers determined both men were under the influence of alcohol and placed them under arrest, Beebe said, adding that Shafton was treated at the scene for his injury.

Beebe said Kaiser's alcohol level was three times over the legal limit.

The men were released to a sober adult and Shafton’s vehicle was impounded, according to the police report.
