Water for Residents Without Electricity

Irene knock out your power? Head to fire company No. 3 on Hopatchung Road for water. But don't drink it.

Hopatcong residents still without electricity can get free water at fire company No. 3 on Hopatchung Road. That's right: free.

Hopatcong Police Chief John Swanson said residents can fill up as much as they need from the 200-300 gallon tanks, which the fire department will keep filled. Swanson said the water will be good for around-the-house purposes—flushing toilets, cleaning—but don't drink it. It's not safe for consumption.

The water tanks are self-serve. Just place a bucket or bottle beneath the spout and turn the handle.

"You can fill up containers of water for us of either hygiene or use it to clean things or flush their toilets," Swanson said. "Without running water, you find it hard to manage without the house. They can come down, grab as much (undrinkable) water as they need."

Swanson said it's been a long time since Hopatcong has had to offer this type of service to residents.
