What a Trooper: NJ State Police Deliver Baby in Back of Minivan

Day-to-day operations for New Jersey State Troopers can range from stopping motorists for driving violations to making arrests on dangerous criminals.

Sometimes they’re called on to assist in a different kind of emergency. Like delivering a baby.

That’s exactly what happened on Friday, May 9 on Rt. 206 in Sussex County. Kimberly and Robert Giarratano were en route to Morristown Medical Center from their Pennsylvania home when the soon-to-be mom’s labor pains intensified, according to New Jersey State Police.

At that point the family – with four- and two-year-old sons in tow – decided to reroute to Newton Hospital and called 9-1-1 for a police escort.

Troopers William Cisko and Luis Jacinto of the Sussex Barracks responded and found the family’s minivan parked in lot of the Frankford Township Municipal Building.

At that point the baby’s head was visible, and the troopers sprung into action, placing Kimberly Giarratano in the backseat and delivering the family’s daughter in a matter of seconds. The baby’s airway was cleared and the troopers wrapped her in a shirt and held her until a first aid squad arrived on scene. 

Robert Giarratano and his sons were taken to the hospital by the Cisko where the family reunited.
