Case of Theft From Soccer Club Goes to Grand Jury

Matthew Simon and Stacey Siegel, each charged with third-degree theft and conspiracy in January, could be indicted.

Now they wait.

A grand jury will decide whether to indict the Hopatcong couple accused of  stealing $15,000 from a borough sports club, public defender Kevin McLoughlin said Monday at the Sussex County courthouse.

Police said the couple brought their children to California in April 2010 and purchased airline tickets, hotel accommodations, a car rental and gas, and made several ATM withdrawals using Hopatcong Hawks Soccer Club funds.

The case exceeded its 60-day early disposition conference limit after several postponments.

"If there's an indictment, we'll take it from there," said McLoughlin, who added he figured the grand jury would decide within 90 days.

The couple's last hearing, in May, was postponed when McLaughlin said he needed time to state review  "a large amount of discovery," or evidence, the state had provided.

Simon and Siegel are former club board members.
