5 Things: Sussex County & Breast Cancer

A county-wide initiative is underway to help spread awareness.

It's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Sussex County is playing its part.

Started by the American Cancer Society in 1985 to increase the awareness and education about the importance of breast health, the month has become a nationwide campaign symbolized by its pink ribbons.

Here's what you need to know about the county's part in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

  1. You Need to Know the Players: The Sussex County Cancer Coalition is teaming up with Project Self-Suffcicency, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the New Jersey CEED program and the Sussex County Department of Environmental and Public Health Services.
  2. You Need to Know to '"Tie-A-Ribbon:" Each Sussex County municipality will decorate its busiest street with pink ribbons and placards.
  3. You Need to Know Why: According to the county, "The purpose is to capture the attention of those passing by in order to relay the key messages about early detection."
  4. You Need to Know a First: It's the first time the whole county will team up on the project.
  5. You Need to Know About Education: Each branch of the Sussex County Libraryw ill post breast health information.
