Councilwoman Charged With Theft Skipped Court, Report Says

Estelle Klein allegedly led police on a slow-speed chase earlier this month after cops said she shoplifted filet mignon, guacamole from local store.

A Hopatcong Councilwoman who was charged earlier this month with resisting arrest and shoplifting failed to show up for her first court appearance on the charges, according to New Jersey Herald.

Estelle Klein's scheduled court appearance Wednesday was requested to be adjourned by her attorney, however this would have been her second adjournment and the court only allows one, the Herald reported. The adjournment request was denied, but Klein still did not show up, according to the newspaper.

Klein is now scheduled to appear on Sept. 10, at which time a bench warrant will be issued for her arrest if she fails to appear.

Klein is accused of eluding Netcong police after the department had received a call of a woman taking roast beef, filet mignon, guacamole and other items without paying and attempted to pull over her vehicle. Netcong police said Klein would not yield to officers and refused to comply once her car was stopped.
