Hopatcong Volunteers Offered Cash for College
Program gives volunteers' families up to $600 a year to attend a Sussex County college or technical school.

Mayor Sylvia Petillo said the state credits the college participating in the program after the borough clerk certifies that a resident is a volunteer. "It's a credit, not a cash transaction," Petillo said. "No money comes to the town."

The borough offers a program allowing volunteers of any Hopatcong group—from the Police Explorers to the Fire Department to the Community Emergency Response Team—up to $600 a year for college or technical school classes in Sussex County.

Volunteers must have served their groups for at least a year, and must request a certificate confirming their length of service at the municipal building.
Hopatcong's council passed a resolution to join the program at Wednesdays meeting at the municipal building. The program also allows dependents of volunteers the money, but each family is limited to $600.
