Democrat Won't Run for Hopatcong Council

Madeline McManus' fourth term expires in December.

An era will end in the winter.

Councilwoman Madeline McManus, a Democrat in her fourth term, said late Sunday night she won't try to reclaim her seat in November's elections. McManus, whose seat expires in December, said in April for one of the two expiring council seats.

"I have so many things I want to do," she said. "I think I might go back to school. I have other journies I want to travel on."

Republicans John Young, an incumbent, and Estelle Klein, who served from 2003 to 2008, will run unopposed in Tuesday's primary elections. Sylvia Petillo, a Republican incumbent, will run uncontested in the primary for her second term as mayor.

No Democrats filed for either race.

Also in April, McManus said she hoped to see competition for the November elections.

"It would be nice for other people to get on," said McManus, a retired Hopatcong elementary teacher now substituting in the district. "I was hoping other people would come and step up. That's what I was really hoping. Just so that the public would hear another voice."
