What Do You Think of Hopatcong's Curfew?

What do you think of Hopatcong's curfew? Too strict? Not tough enough?

Hopatcong's codebook says people under age 18 can't be out from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. from the day after Labor Day through May 30 of the next year. They get an extra hour, until 10:30 p.m., from May 31 through Labor Day of the same year.

Of course, there are exceptions:

The minor is upon an emergency errand involving the health, safety and welfare of the minor himself or some other person.

The minor is accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other adult person having the care, custody and control of the minor.

The minor is actually engaged in or is going directly to or is returning directly from a lawful trade, profession or occupation in which the minor is engaged and which makes it necessary for him to be in such places within the proscribed times.

The minor is a holder of a valid New Jersey driver's license and is operating a motor vehicle through the Borough of Hopatcong upon streets and public ways contained therein.

The minor is in the performance of a duty directed by his parent, guardian or other person having his care or custody.

The minor is going directly to or returning directly from a legitimate evening activity sponsored by the municipality, the Board of Education or some other legitimate adult organization within the Borough of Hopatcong, and shall include attendance at church and religious activities and school activities, including classes, dances and sports events, as well as public fireworks displays and other similar events.

Also according to the codebook:

Any minor violating the provisions of this chapter shall be subject to the penalties provided for minors by statute, and any adult violating the provisions of this chapter shall be subject to a fine not exceeding the sum of $500 or to imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both, in the discretion of the Municipal Court Judge.
