Primary Election: Hopatcong, Sparta Voting Guide

See who's running and where you can vote.

June 4, 2013 in New Jersey is Primary Election Day, and there’s plenty of ballots to be punched as voters hit the polls looking to elect their officials.

In Hopatcong, the borough council has two open seats up for grabs, with three men seeking terms.

Incumbent Michael Francis is seeking his second consecutive term, and challengers Richard Hoer and James Sheridan have also thrown their hats into the ring. Current council member Howard Baker, whose term expires Dec. 31, 2013, is not seeking reelection.

The two available seats are each three years in length of term.

Under the Faulkner Act of New Jersey, the Sparta Township Mayor and Council will have no election this year.

At the county level, Gary Chiusano is being challenged by Alicia Ferrante for surrogate. The term is for five years.

Two seats are also open on the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, each bringing with them three-year terms.

Two of the board’s five members – Richard Vohden and George Graham – are running for reelection, and will be challenged by Gary Larson and Helen Wilson Lefrois.

In Sparta Township, there are 14 districts and nine polling locations. They are as follows:

  • Town Hall, 65 Main Street, District 1
  • Fire Headquarters, 141 Woodport Road, District 2, 9 & 11
  • First Presbyterian Church, 32 Main Street, District 3 & 12
  • Methodist Church, 71 Sparta Avenue, Districts 4 & 8
  • Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 246 Woodport Road, District 5
  • Alpine School, 151 Andover Road, District 6
  • VFW, 66 Main Street, Districts 7 & 13
  • Mohawk Avenue School, 18 Mohawk Avenue, Districts 10 & 14


In Hopatcong, there are 12 districts and nine polling locations. They are as follows:

  • Municipal Building, 111 Rivery Styx Road, Districts 1 & 9
  • Firehouse No. 2, Maxim Drive and Indian Trail, District 2 & 7
  • Firehouse No. 4, Jefferson and Tulane Trails, District 3
  • Ambulance Building, 514 Maxim Drive, District 4
  • Hopatcong Middle School, Francis Avenue and David Road, District 5
  • Civic Center, 32 Lakeside Blvd., District 6
  • Board of Education Building, 2 Windsor Avenue, District 8
  • St. Jude's Church, 40 Maxim Drive, District 10
  • Firehouse No. 3, Hopatchung Road and Durban Avenue, District 11

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 4.
