Sparta Council Votes to Stop Staffers' Personal Use of Town Equipment

Until Tuesday, it was legal for Sparta employees with permission to borrow town-owned equipment for their personal use.

The Sparta Township Council voted unanimously at its meeting Tuesday night in favor of a resolution to bar town employees from using municipal equipment for anything other than official government business, the New Jersey Herald reports.

The vote calls for a change in the Township of Sparta Policies and Procedures Manual to discontinue the longstanding practice of allowing staffers with a supervisor's okay to use township property for personal use, the article said.

Tuesday's vote appears to be a council response to a Herald report from last summer that identified several employees alleged to have used township generators in their homes—with permission from Sparta's director of public works—following Superstorm Sandy last October.

Last month, Mayor Gil Gibbs and the Township Council discussed the matter and decided to amend the policy.
