Sparta Moves Up August Council Meeting

Special election bumps Aug. 13 meeting up to Aug. 6.

Written by Michael Daigle

The Sparta Township Council  bowed to the reality of a special primary election on Aug. 13 and moved its meeting to Aug. 6.

The special primary is being held to select  Republican and Democratic party candidates for the open U.S. Senate seat. The seat opened when Sen. Frank Lautenberg died.

Gov. Chris Christie appointed former state Attorney General Jeffrey Chesia to the seat until a replacement is elected. Chesia is not seeking to be elected to the rest of the term.

Christie set Aug 13 as the primary date. The special general election to fill the Senate seat will be held on Oct. 16.

Mayor Gilbert Gibbs said the council did not want to conflict with the election.
