Choice School Competition to Attend Lenape Crowded
Hopatcong school board has accepted 21 applications for 15 seats at Stanhope high school.
Hopatcong Board of Education president Clifford Lundin cautioned parents this week that the competition is stiff for choice school seats at Lenape Valley Regional High School for 2013-14.
Lenape Valley was named last year as a participant in New Jersey Interdistrict Public School Choice program by the Department of Education. The program allows students the opportunity to attend a choice school within 20 miles of their home districts.
Lenape has 15 openings for the 2013-14 school year, Lundin said.

Lenape will hold a lottery to choose the students to attend the school, he said.
The deadline for students to notify their home district that they are seeking to attend a choice school district is Nov. 30.

Applications are due at Lenape by Dec. 7, the Stanhope-based school said.
On Monday, the Hopatcong school board accepted applications from 21 eighth graders seeking to attend Lenape; one application from a pre-kindergarten student to attend the Alfred Vail School in Morris Township; and one application from a student to attend Morris Hills Regional High School in Rockaway.
Lundin said Hopatcong does not choose the students, but accepts the applications and forwards them to the choice school.
Last year, nine Hopatcong students applied to attend Lenape for the current school year, and the Stanhope-based high school accepted six of them.
A total of 16 Hopatcong students applied to attend a choice school last year.
