Hopatcong, Sparta Schools Remain Closed

Hopatcong schools closed until Nov. 12, Sparta schools closed until further notice.

Both Hopatcong and Sparta schools will remain closed one week after Hurricane Sandy tore through the northeast, and left thousands without power.

Hopatcong schools are officially closed until Nov. 12, according to OEM coordinator Robert Haffner.

Sparta schools will remain closed until further notice, according to a bulletin posted on the district website.

Both towns experienced serious damage from the storm, with some homes destroyed and numerous wires and trees down in the roads.

The communities have been coming together at shelters set up at Hopatcong High School and Sussex County Technical School in Sparta.

Its amazing how the community has come together during this very hard time. Donations are rolling in. There are drop off points at the Pathmark in ledgewood and right in front of the store there is a truck collecting and donating supplies. The martial arts studio in landing is offering its space for cell phone charging and warming area .Towels and non perishable beverages are being taken at Hopatcong High School! All our council men and women and our mayor have been tirelessly helping the community at the shelter along with the Red cross dramatically improving the flow within the shelter. The Americorp is in the shelter as well. But i feel that it is all of our local businesses and citizens that have had an out pouring of love and donations for those in need. I am proud to say that Hopatcong truly shines as what community really means V

Don't open the High School till every resident in Hopatcong has electrical service - The shelter needs to be operational till that point

If this goes another week they should open the school for educating on a rolling basis by grade in the empty rooms and the auditorium, library, tech center... particularly for the high schoolers who don't need to be baby-sat so much. All Algebra 2 in room X, USHist 1 in room Y, the Basic required courses, (Maths, english, history, sciences) The kids are going to graduate in July at this rate.
