SHS Field Hockey Coach Earns Kudos from Sparta School Board

Karen Savasta led the Spartans to a 7-6-1 record and earned numerous end-of-season honors, including Coach of the Year.

The Sparta Township Board of Education recognized the efforts of the woman behind the improved Sparta High School field hockey team at its Monday meeting, according to The Alternative Press.

The school board praised coach Kristin Savasta for being a role model for the team, which ended its 2013 season with a record of 7-6-1. The Spartans saw their team total for goals throughout the season increase from 19 earned in 2012 to 36 this year. Similarly, assists earned rose to 32 from 11 the previous year. Savasta's role in this success did not go unnoticed, as she was named Coach of the Year by Muggs Media and the New Jersey Herald and was given the Coaching Sportsmanship Award by the league referees, the article said.

"The season was a huge success because of a team effort and  the hard work, dedication, and positive attitude put forth by the coaches and each and every player," Savasta told TAP.
