Sparta Backs Out of School Choice Program Application

Board of education unanimously approves rescinding application to state.

A major change to the Sparta School district’s enrollment won’t be happening, after the board of education voted to rescind its application to the state join the Interdistrict Public School Choice Program.

The board voted unanimously to rescind, according to njherald.com, after initially applying in April. New Jersey School’s Commissioner Chris Cerf is expected to complete his application reviews by July 30.

Residents and community members alike did not side with the board’s initial application, njherald.com reported, and voiced concerns over the program’s hand-tying that once enrolled, district’s have no say in denying a student once accepted into the district.

Currently seven districts in Sussex County are part of the choice schools program.
