Sparta Student Finalist in Scholarship Competition

Violinist Kathryn Chamberlain in the running for $1,000 music education scholarship.

Sparta resident and violinist Kathryn Chamberlain has made it to the final round in Don Bosco Prep’s Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition with two qualifying performances in the contest.

The Scholarship Competition committee has selected thirteen finalists to perform the final concert of Chapel Concerts on Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the music room of St. John’s Hall.

  • Pianist Nick Bermudez from Glen Rock
  • Piccoloist Emma Bruder from Franklin Lakes
  • Violinist Kathryn Chamberlain from Sparta
  • Singer/Songwriter Timothy Gysin from Waldwick
  • Bart Lasecki from Montvale
  • Marimba Player Neil McNulty from Randolph
  • Bari-Tenor William Martorano from Washington Township
  • Pianist Charlie Mezzini from Washington Township
  • Classical Guitarist Nicholas Giordano from Oakland
  • Soprano Kristina Walz from Ramsey
  • Harpist Katy Wong from Ridgewood
  • Pianist Michelle Yan from Hillsdale
  • Soprano Michelle Zink from Wyckoff

Of these, one winner will be selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used towards music education. These young artists, from high schools throughout the area, have made it through two rounds of auditions. They are judged by a panel of experts on talent, technique, musicianship, skill, interpretation, presentation, presence. The competitors compete against a standard of excellence, rather than against each other. 

Judges included Gaetano Cecere, Don Bosco Prep’s Band Director; Toni Bilotti Cecere, Don Bosco Prep’s Choral and Concert Director; Kristin Dabaghian, Music Director, St. John the Baptist, Hillsdale and concert organist; Patricia Lazzara, Flutist; and Gay Willis, Broadway actor, and Don Bosco Prep Alumnus Christopher Capone who is a voice major at Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts.

This is the third year for Don Bosco Prep’s Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition, established in 2010 to celebrate, recognize and reward the talent, commitment and discipline of young performers.
