Sparta Teachers Contract Talks Hit Stalemate

Year-long negotiations between union and board started where it began after hours-long meeting to start the week.

The contract talks have been ongoing for a year now, and despite a meeting that lasted into the wee hours of Tuesday morning, Sparta teachers and the district’s board of education have still come to a stalemate.

Preceded by a rally of some 125 members of the Sparta Education Association (SEA), a negotiations meeting Monday night ended right where it began – with no settlement, according to an njherald.com report.

SEA President Sue Sawey told njherald.com the negotiations have come down to money, but neither she or board president Frank Favichia would release details about the contract’s still unsettled pieces, the report said.

Approximately 350 teachers, paraprofessionals and secretaries are represented in the teacher’s union, the report said. Both sides last settled on a collective bargaining agreement prior to the 2010-11 school year, when the union agreed to a single-year pay freeze, according to the report.

The next board of education meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 24.
