Sparta, Hopatcong Football Teams Earn State Playoff Berths

Spartans finish regular season at 8-1 and receive second seed, while Chiefs are the eighth seed in their bracket.

Hail the Spartans and the Chiefs: Both of our local high school football teams have earned spots in the 2013 NJSIAA divisional playoffs.

The Sparta Township High School football team, led by quarterback Matt Seville and receiver Lucas Faria, clinched its spot 2013 in the NJSIAA North 1, Group 3 playoffs by trouncing Morristown High 38-3 last Saturday. The Spartans, the tournament's No. 2 seed, takes on seventh-seeded Englewood High at home Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Spartans ended their regular season record at 8-1.

Meanwhile, the Hopatcong football team ended its regular season with a big win over Walkill Valley by the score of 36-21. The Chiefs move on to the NJSIAA North 1, Group 1 playoffs as the eighth seed.  The boys take on top-seeded Hasbrouck Heights on enemy turf Friday at 7 p.m.

Hopatcong's final regular season record was 6-3.
