Most Endangered N.J. Places List Includes Sandy-Torn Mansions, Farmland

Group hopes to heighten awareness of 10 sites in need of preservation funding.

A state historic preservation advocacy group released its list of the most endangered New Jersey sites Wednesday, detailing damage, some Superstorm-Sandy related, that has put 10 landmarks at risk for demolition.  Properties that were classified as the "most endangered" have architectural and historic integrity with an identified threat and Preservation New Jersey, the organization that compiled the list, felt their inclusion could potentially help legislators realize the importance in preserving them. Included on the list is Morris County's Glen Alpin property in Harding Township. The Gothic Revival mansion is threatened by a need for sustainable use, according to Preservation New Jersey.  The Morris Canal Rockaway River Aqueduct, in …

Hopatcong to Auction Non-Conforming Lot

Homeowner had sought an easement for his well which is located on an adjacent, borough-owned lot.

The borough will put up for auction a non-conforming borough-owned lot which contains the well of the adjacent home. Borough Attorney John Ursin said Wednesday the adjacent lot at 2 Wabash Trail is for sale. During the sale process, the homeowner disclosed that his wellhead is actually located one to two feet inside the adjacent property. The homeowner, through Ursin, asked the borough for an easement to  allow the new owner to maintain his well. Councilman Michael Francis objected. “I have not met an easement that I like,” Francis said. Councilman Richard Bunce said the well is not the only encroachment issue with the property, citing walls and other structures that extend into the borough’s vacant lot. All are issues the new property …

Right-of-ways sure are a funny thing. First you think you have them and then you don't. Only your council can decide which way the wind is pointing on the right-of-way side. Maybe they bring a Magic 8 Ball to the meeting for these important decisions. "If the well is less than a foot (0.8") over the line should we give it to them? "What do you say Magic 8 ball "- "Definitely No".   more ›

8 Money-Saving Tricks for Your Memorial Day BBQ (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? Here are new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbecue experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   Here's their tips on how to save money on your Memorial Day feast. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead — say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled rib eye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbecue grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but …

Sparta Softball Slips by River Dell in Extras

Playoff opener takes nine innings to find a winner.

Their regular season records were virtually the same, and their playoff seedings were both in the middle of the pack. Neither the Sparta Spartans or River Dell softball teams wanted their seasons to end Tuesday, but only one could win. That's why it took two extra innings of play to find a winner in the North 1, Group 3 playoff opener, where Sparta won 6-5, according to nj.com. Sparta scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning after amassing 10 hits to River Dell's 11, nj.com reported. River Dell scored all its runs in the second inning. Sparta will head to High Point and take on the number 2 seeded team on Thursday, May 23.

Yankees Help Bring New Rival for Red Bulls

New York Yankees and Manchester City have teamed up to bring a new professional soccer team to NYC by 2015.

The New York Red Bulls, who call Harrison their home, will not be the only face of professional footy in the metropolitan area for much longer. New York City is planning to kick the ball around in the MLS come the spring of 2015. Major League Soccer Commissioner Dan Garber announced the birth of the newest franchise in the MLS: the New York City Football Club. The new club will be owned by 2012 Barclay’s Premier League champions Manchester City and the 27 time World Series champion New York Yankees. “This opportunity is huge for us and huge for the city. We will work to deliver good, beautiful football to the fans in New York,” said Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano. “We are very happy and honored to have the Yankees as partners.” Yankees…

James, Why belittle another sport (which I dislike, by the way) in order to make your point? And all my point was that the attempt to market MLS as "major league," given the premiere leagues already in places--a number in Europe--was, to me, a waste of time. Can you go to an MLS game and have a great time and see a competitive, fairly topnotch game? Sure, in the same way you can go see the …   more ›

Sparta Demands Audience With Service Electric Cable

Council still trying to resolve Superstorm Sandy issues.

Enough is enough. Faced with delay after delay, the  Township Council instructed township attorney Thomas Ryan last week to write a letter to Service Electric Cable Television Inc. demanding the company send a representative to appear before the board. The township has been trying  since last fall to  meet with cable officials to discuss the service outage and a possible refund for Sparta residents. Ryan was instructed to  offer the company a choice of two meeting dates to discuss with the council the company’s performance during Superstorm Sandy. Service Electric has  a 10-year contract with Sparta. Following the damaging storm, Sparta residents have appeared several times at council meetings to complain about the cable company, including…

Could we get Thomas Ryan to be Hopatcong's attorney? I can't envision Ursin writing these type of letters on behalf of the residents of Hopatcong. Hopatcong could sure use a good legal letter writer that cares to address the issues of its average residents. But then again, we don't have a Mayor who would ask him to do this kind of letter writing.   more ›
