Early Dismissal for Parent-Teacher Conferences

Planning board meets tonight.

1. There will be early dismissal for parent-teacher conferences at Hudson Maxim, Tulsa Trail and Durban Avenue schools. Hudson Maxim will also have evening conferences 2. Hopatcong's planning board meets at 7:30 p.m. at borough hall. 3. The "Theology Table" meets at Frank's Pizzeria at 6:15 p.m. It's run by St. Jude's Parish Deacon Tom Friel. If you're looking for dinner and a religious discussion, here's your chance. 4. Oct. 15 through Dec. 15 is leaf pick-up in the borough. You can also bring your leaves to the recycling center. 5. Meals On Wheels is looking for volunteers to deliver food to Hopatcong seniors. Call (973) 209-0123 if you'd like to help.

1. Today's the second day of the New Jersey Education Association's conventions in Trenton, which means children have off school. Drivers, be safe. Kids could be on the road at odd hours. 2. The Civic Center will host a gang awareness seminar at 6:30 p.m. You may not think gangs are a problem in Hopatcong, and you're mostly right. But it might be a good idea to bring the kids to this event so they can learn about them. 3. There will be a comedy night at Fire Department No. 3 on Hopatchung Road on Saturday night. 1. There'a a mayor and council meeting at borough hall at 7:30 p.m. The last meeting was canceled. 2. Hopatcong's Little League will hold its presidential election at the Civic Center at 7 p.m. Votes must be in by 9 p.m. Incumbent Cathy Bowen and Hopatcong Warriors president Dan Titus are running against each other. 3. Hopatcong's Women's Club will meet at the Civic Center's lower level at 10:30 a.m. Borough women looking for companions are encouraged to attend. 4. Today's the end of the first marking period for the high school and middle school. Expect report cards soon, parents. 5. The borough recycling center will be open from 9 a.m. - noon.

Today's the last day to vote for Hopatcong Middle School's bid at a $50,000 grant.

1. Today's the last day to vote for Hopatcong Middle School's bid at a $50,000 grant on powerabrightfuture.com. The Clorox-sponsored program began Oct. 5 and could help the school afford new history textbooks. The catch: you could only vote once a day. 2. Hopatcong's Business League meets at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center's upper level. Meet Business League President Bob Winegar and discuss issues affecting borough businesses. 3. 1. It's Halloween weekend! As if you didn't know that already. Anyway, be safe. Unlike some towns, Hopatcong's police department hasn't set any time restrictions on trick-or-treating. Enjoy! 2. Children will be breakin' it down across Hopatcong tonight. St. Jude's Parish will host a Halloween dance for fifth-eighth graders at 7 p.m.. The Hopatcong High School Parent Teacher Student Organization will hold its fifth annual Halloween dance for kindergarteners-fifth graders at 6 p.m.  3. 1. Tonight's mayor and council meeting at borough hall has been canceled. It will meet again on Nov. 3, the day after the general election. 2. The Middle School Parent Teacher Organization will not meet at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. The meeting was canceled for personal reasons concerning a MSPTO member. You can still help them get a $50,000 grant by going to powerabrightfuture.com and voting for the Middle School's bid. The money would most likely go toward updating history books. 3. Borough Shuts Down

It's Columbus Day! Or is it something else?

1. Don't bother heading to borough hall today. The place will be shut down in observation of Columbus Day, as will most banks and other government offices. 2. Speaking of Columbus Day, did you know today is called "Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Day" in some parts of America? Apparently, some people took offense that Christopher Columbus had his own day.  3. In addition to borough hall closing up shop for the day, Hopatcong's schools are also closed. But that doesn't mean work won't be getting done inside the buildings. Teachers will be in service. 4. Though the kids won't be in class, athletes may be on the field.
