Hopatcong Budget Has $38 Tax Hike for Average Home

Public hearing set for April 3; spending plan tops $16.5 million.

The owner of a home assessed at the Hopatcong borough average could see their property taxes rise $38 this year, based on the 2013 municipal budget introduced by the council. The $16.556 million spending plan calls for $12.4 million in property taxes, a 3-percent increase from 2012. Overall the 2013 budget is $376,767 larger than the 2012 budget. The public hearing on the budget, when the council will vote on adoption, is scheduled for April 3. Borough auditor Paul Lerch said the Borough Council and administration brought the budget in below the state-mandated tax levy cap. I remember when the three candidates were running a few years ago and "someone" (not naming names) went to St. Jude's and told the parishioners that the council was under attack for being Christian. Found out later it wasn't true, but by that time the damage was done and the election was over. Can you guess who got re-elected? Give them credit they know how to spin. Lower Budget, Better Business Eyed by Sparta

Township Council lays out plans for improvement in the township for 2013.

Cutting down the township’s debt, bringing in a 2013 budget below the state cap, setting up emergency protocols and improving communication are among the top goals set by the Sparta Township Council recently. “This is a township council that will work for you,” said Mayor Gilbert Gibbs. “We’re going to have a big year.” Overall, each council member set goals based on their committee liaison assignments. Gibbs' first goal is reinvigorating the township’s development and construction efforts to show businesses interested in moving to Sparta that the township is business-friendly. He called for tighter budgeting. He also wants to improve the township’s water system, begin to reduce the debt service paid annually with better financial planning…
