Sparta 2013 Budget Bumps Taxes $44

Township Council OKs $24.5 million spending plan.

The owner of a home assessed at the township average will see a $44 municipal property tax hike following the Tuesday passage of the 2013 township budget. The Township Council unanimously approved the $24.5 million budget that calls for $15.9 million to be raised by local taxes. The owner of a home assessed at the township average of $295,600 will pay $1,998 in municipal  property taxes this year. That homeowner will also pay $32.52 in municipal open space taxes, and $138.64 to support the Sparta Public Library. Tax Hike Questioned in Face of Home Value Drop

Spending plan for 2013 calls for $38 increase in municipal property taxes.

The sharp year-to-year drop in the total assessed value of the property in the borough led to questions Wednesday as to what the 2013 municipal budget actually means. The Borough Council approved the 2013 spending plan that calls for a $38 tax hike for the owner of a home assessed at the borough average of $214,600. An owner of a home assessed at the borough average can expect to pay $1,901 in municipal taxes in 2013. It was the assessment drop, coupled with a tax hike that confused resident Jeffrey Carey. Sparta 2013 Municipal Budget Coming March 5

Officials aim to reduce debt service in new spending plan.

The Township Council plans to introduce the 2013 municipal budget at a special public meeting next week. Mayor Gilbert Gibbs called for the special meeting. He said earlier when setting goals for the year, the council would address the amount of debt and borrowing in the budget and bring in a budget below the mandated 2 percent cap. The council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at town hall. The township’s 2012 budget called for a $23.53 million spending plan supported by a local tax levy of $15.6 million. State aid in the 2012 budget was $1.2 million. The budget was based on a total township property assessment of $2.358 billion, down $37 million from 2011, when the township’s total value was 2.395 billion. The 2012 budget was $238,000…

Minimal Tax Increase, on Time, Goal for Sparta

Township manager lays out plan for setting next year's spending.

Sparta Township Manager David Troast on Tuesday explained the goals he has set for gathering the necessary financial information and creating a review schedule to ensure the Township Council completes the 2013 municipal budget on time. He said the key tasks will be incorporating uncertain state aid, the impact of  annual tax appeals and keeping the tax levy increase within the state-mandated 2 percent cap. Troast said the council needs to get the budget introduced and passed according to the schedule set by the state Department of Community Affairs. “This is something that has been an issue in the past,” Troast said. The township’s passed a $23.4 million budget for 2012 that called for raising $15.6 million in local taxes. The municipal …
