Northwestern Next Stop for Lake Hopatcong's Sina

Gill St. Bernard's standout ready to bring his talents to the Chicago school next fall.

The best way to find out what kind of a basketball game Jaren Sina is having is to watch the man guarding him.  If the Gill St. Bernard’s senior point guard takes a long deep breath and sighs in resignation before tugging on his shorts and taking a defense stance, you know Sina is doing pretty well. The Lake Hopatcong resident is a menace to anyone who is trying to cover him on the court. Sina recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Northwestern University next fall. Preseason workouts are underway for the Knights in preparation for their season and home opener on December 14 against Our Saviour New American of Centereach, N.Y. Sina was heavily recruited by numerous Division I programs and was more than happy to…

VIDEO: Did That Really Just Happen?

Hopatcong High School student whips basketball off the wall and through the net.

There are cool trick shots. And there are shots that blow others out of the atmosphere. This is one of them. Brought to you by none other than Hopatcong's BroAwesomeBros, a collection of borough teens who have all but mastered the art of the ridiculous, a student lets the ball roll around his arms before turning away from the hoop, slamming the ball underhand off the wall and watching it fall right into the net. We know we wouldn't want to face these kids in H-O-R-S-E.

VIDEO: Best Basketball Shot You'll See Today

Take six seconds and enjoy this clip of Hopatcong kids having fun.

So, these might guys have something. A group of Hopatcong friends, calling themselves BroAwesomeBros, recently got together and taped themselves making trick shots in the Hopatcong High School gym. Here's the best one on YouTube, and it's not just because one of them is wearing an official Patch T-shirt. All right, maybe that had a little something to do with it.

Freshman Basketball Back at High School?

Hopatcong school board approves parent-funded programs for 2012-2013.

The Hopatcong High School freshmen boys basketball team could look to become the latest program to become self-funded. The Board of Education voted to allow the program to exist Monday night if it can become self-sufficient and has enough players to justify a team for the 2012-2013 season. Same goes for the girls if it can field a team. It isn't believed, however, that a enough interest can be garnered for a freshman girls squad. Athletic Director Tom Vara said the incoming freshman class has a strong basketball background. He said varsity head coach Jim Tobin backed the move. "He feels very strongly that this group of eighth-graders coming in, these soon-to-be freshmen, are going to be strong enough and large enough to handle a freshman …

VIDEO: Hopatcong Kids Sink Cool Trick Shots

As part of a class project.

As part of a project for Hopatcong High School teacher Todd Jensen's history class, students Brian Attas, Jesse Farrell, Pat McNamara, Stephen Rogers, Willie Russell and John Yohano put together this YouTube clip—produced by Alex Lieberman—on the history of basketbal trick shots. Watch the students as they first detail the basics—from the layup to the blocked shot—and then hit some absolutely insane shots. McNamara, a Chiefs point foward, even sinks two backwards bank shots ... off a deck.

Guard to Rep Hopatcong in Morris-Sussex Game

Hunter Guard will be Chiefs' lone representative in Wednesday's Sussex-Morris Senior All-Star Game in Hopatcong.

Hunter Guard will have the chance to wear a Moravian College basketball jersey for the next four years. But the Hopatcong High School senior will wear his Chiefs No. 23 one last time this week. Guard will be Hopatcong's sole representative Sussex County takes on Morris County in the annual Senior All-Star Game at Hopatcong High School at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Guard, who committed to the Greyhounds in January, was Hopatcong's leading scorer as the Chiefs reached the second round of the North 1, Group 2 playoffs this season. "He's had a big affect on the program," Hopatcong head coach Jim Tobin said. "If you look at his three years collectively—he was a main part of that. "He took the proper steps in the program to become the player he was. He …

Sullivan, Guard Lead Chiefs to Playoff Win [VIDEO]

Hopatcong boys drop Westwood in the first round of the North 1, Group 2 basketball playoffs.

It looked like the biggest moment of Hopatcong's season. The students' section in Hopatcong High School's gymnasium erupted when Dan Sullivan caught the ball on the right wing and drained the fourth-quarter three-pointer that gave the Chiefs a comfortable lead en route to a 48-41 win over No. 9 Westwood in the North 1, Group 2 first round Tuesday. But it wasn't even Sullivan's—let alone Hopatcong's—top feat, head coach Jim Tobin said. The senior guard's defensive showing against the Cardinals' (13-13) leading scorer, Jake Kandel, who finished with 14 points, was the real highlight, Tobin said. "The intensity on defense is what I was looking for," said Tobin, who switched Sullivan to Kandel in the second half after the shifty Westwood guard…

But why wait to show your love? The Chiefs and head coach Jim Tobin will most likely want all the support they can get before hitting the hardwood in the biggest game of their season. So feel free to give a shoutout to your favorite Hopatcong boys basketball player or even the whole team in the comments below.

The winner will take on the victor of No. 1 Pascack Hills vs. No. 16 Ramsey. You Need to Know the Chiefs are Rolling: After a tough 1-4 start, Hopatcong has gone 12-8. "We've turned things around," head coach Jim Tobin said Monday. Tobin can thank senior forward Hunter Guard, who's averaged 16 points per game this season, and a strong supporting cast.
