Troop 88 First to Earn Search and Rescue Badge

Hopatcong Scouts complete intensive four-week course.

Boy Scout Troop 88 of Hopatcong began an intense four-week Search and Rescue Merit Badge workshop in February which required the troop of young recruits and their Patrol Leaders to study, prepare and become certified through an on-line ICS training program. The Incident Command System (ICS) is a standardized approach to emergency incident management. Organized by Patrick Crowe of Ramapo Rescue Dog Association and EMT / BSA Troop 88 Committee Chair Judi Wolff, the SAR workshop prepared the scouts for the implementation of an emergency situation. Hopatcong Search Dog, Rosco, Gets 2nd Home

The Hopatcong police department's bloodhound has a home away from home. And a borough teen has achieved his goal. Stephen Duncan, 17, built a kennel at the department for Detective Mike Luciani's K-9, Roscoe, over the winter. The project gave Duncan the Boy Scouts greatest honor—an Eagle Scout badge. Duncan, a member of Troop 91, said he had dreamed of earning the award for more than a decade. "I've always known about it from when I started [Boy Scouts] when I was little," said Duncan, whose father, Bob, helps run the troop. "An Eagle Scout came into one of our meetings when I was probably about 10 years old and I knew I really wanted to be like him really bad." $600 For Hopatcong Police Dog, Pound Project

More than 100 attend fundraiser.

A night of bowling and $600? They'll take it. Hopatcong Scouts helped raise money for the Hopatcong police department's bloodhound, Rosco, and the Hopatcong Pound Project at Circle Lanes in Roxbury on Saturday. More than 100 people attended the event, which also saw Hopatcong Police Detective Mike Luciani and Pound Project leaders Wendy Ciardi and Ed VanOrden. The donations will be presented 7 p.m. Jan. 18 at St. Jude's Church. Donna Strong said she wanted to thank Circle Lanes and snack stand operator, Tammy, "for helping us organize such a successful fundraiser," she said. Click here to read more on Rosco. Borough volunteers slug it out at Senior Field to cap Hopatcong Days.

Hopatcong's ambulance squad won Sunday's Hopatcong Days softball championship, dropping the Boy Scouts parents, 11-3, in the finals. The Boy Scouts beat the fire department, 20-12, in the opening round. Rosters Ambulance squad Dan Rodriguez, James Tuttle, Brian Williver, Kevin Sorensen, Rich Gathen, Casey Lakicevic, Jim Sorensen, Sal DeVivo, Tim Maginnis, Donna Stone, and Shaun Poland. Boy Scouts parents Marshall Speizer, Rich Romaine, Erin Amato, Mike Nicotra, John Wilhem, Matt Mood, Dave Barnish, Phil Engle, Mark Frato, Tom Lupo, and Frank Cuputo.
