No layoffs in spending plan; staff being shuffled and electives being added to high school.
A chastised but feisty Hopatcong Board of Education approved Monday a 2013-14 budget that begins to restore some of the classes and programs whose absence residents blamed for a decline in the education offered by the district. The $35.339 million budget will raise the school taxes for the owner of a home assessed at the borough average of $214,610 by $64.39 to $3,583. The spending plan calls for raising $23.423 million in local taxes, up $459,285 from 2012-13. The local tax levy rose 1.99-percent, below the state mandated 2-percent cap, board president Clifford Lundin said. Lundin said the recent reassessment done by the borough factored into the new budget as it lowered the total value of the borough by nearly $600 million from 2012 and …

Dolores Krowl, Judith Antonelli sworn in at reorganization meeting.
In a brief reorganization meeting Monday, new member Judith Antonelli and incumbent Dolores Krowl were sworn into three-year terms on the Hopatcong Board of Education. Board president Clifford Lundin, also re-elected to a three-year term, was again named to that post. Lundin, however, was unable to attend the meeting. Board member Susan Madar told the board Lundin contacted her Monday afternoon to say that his return from a trip had been delayed, and he was just landing at the airport in Allentown, Pa. Lundin will have to be sworn into office by Board Secretary Theresa Sierchio at a later date. Joanne Passerini was named board vice president. Antonelli, the top-voter getter in the November election, replaced incumbent Joan Reilly, who …

New panel to improve high school will meet on Dec. 3.
The 52-member High School Task Force will meet for the first time on Dec. 3 at Hopatcong High School. Board of Education president Clifford Lundin said Monday that the time of the meeting will be determined as soon as the board hears from the New Jersey School Board Association facilitator, who will help organize the group’s efforts. The task force was formed late in the summer after Hopatcong’s ranking in two statewide magazine and newspaper rankings slipped sharply. The task force is designed to find ways to improve the educational experience at the district schools. Parent Jackie Turkington, who is a member of the task force, said she was concerned about the drop in ranking. “People make the decisions about where they purchase a home on…

Union president said salary hike figure was mentioned by board president on Patch.
The Hopatcong Education Association told the Board of Education Monday it would accept the board’s salary offer for paraprofessionals that board president Clifford Lundin mentioned on Hopatcong Patch in response to a Sept. 12 article. In a series of responses to comments to that article about a contract language impasse with the teachers union, Lundin explained that the unit of the union that represents teachers aides, cafeteria workers and custodians has not been able for three years to reach an agreement on a new contract. He said that the unit rejected the board’s last offer “which was in the range of 2.4 percent per year over four years.” On Monday, teachers union president Susan Hill, speaking during the public portion of the board …
