35-year-old drug and weapon charges from Friday evening motor vehicle stop.
A Newton man was caught with heroin and a knife following a motor vehicle stop Saturday, Sparta Police said. Jason Hanrahan, 35, was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hypodermic syringes, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to a report supplied by Sgt. John-Paul Beebe. Sparta Police first responded to a call from a motorist about a possible drunk driver traveling on Route 15 North at about 7 p.m. Friday, Beebe said. Green Township man charged with DWI after allegedly crashing into pole.
Nearly 100 Sparta residents experienced a post-Superstorm Sandy power outage on Nov. 11. But the loss of power was unrelated to the storm and instead the result of an alleged drunk driver crashing into a utility pole, Sparta Police Sgt. John-Paul Beebe said. Sparta woman charged with assault by auto, DWI and careless driving.
A Sparta man was struck and pinned into a guide rail by an alleged drunk driver Sunday night on Seneca Lake Road, police said. Charlene Myers, 40, a Seneca Lake Road resident, was charged with DWI, careless driving and fourth-degree assault by auto. According to a report released by Sparta Sgt. John-Paul Beebe, Myers was under the influence of alcohol when she struck a utility tractor that pinned Salvatore Pietropinto, 63, against a guide rail by his home Sunday at about 7:15 p.m. Pietropinto was cleaning debris from Superstorm Sandy near the roadway at the time of the accident, the report said. Police say a 42-year-old Hopatcong woman was drunk when she left the scene of an accident after she ran over a road sign early Thursday morning. Jennifer Krip drove over the Durban Avenue-Flora Avenue street sign before leaving a trail of oil while driving to a driveway on Flora Avenue, where she parked her car at approximately 1:32 a.m., police said. A motorist behind Krip's vehicle called police, saying he saw the incident, and then followed the car to the driveway, police said. The man alerted police to Krip's car once they arrived, according to police. Krip was allegedly asleep behind the wheel when she was found, and then allegedly fell over during a field sobriety test. A Hopatcong woman whose blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit destroyed a resident's lawn with her car, Hopatcong police said. Michele Murray, 43, was arrested for DWI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, driving while her license was suspended, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving with unsafe tires after the alleged incident, police said. According to police, a resident reported seeing a pickup truck tear up his neighbor's yard on Chincopee Avenue and then drive toward Hopatchung Road at about 5:45 a.m. on Aug. 29. A drunk man crashed his boat into another vessel in the River Styx cove area of Lake Hopatcong near Pavinci’s Italian Grill on Saturday night, according to Hopatcong police. Police said Lawrence Lohr, 44, of Budd Lake, refused to take an alcohol breath test after they found him on his boat at the crash site. Police said they received a report of a crash near the River Styx bridge just before midnight and found the boats about 1,500 feet into the cove in front of Pavinci’s. Officers used a civilian boat from Johnny’s Marina to get to the vessels after the State Police Marine Division said it did not have a boat on the lake at the time and estimated it would be an hour until they could get to the site. The Division of Highway Traffic Safety has awarded "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" grant money to the Hopatcong Police Department. The department said it was awarded 88 additional hours for DWI enforcement patrol. It also said there will be enhanced patrols and a checkpoint from Friday through Sept. 3. "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" is a concentrated national effort, helping to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education, the department said. Launched nationally in 1999, the program works to combat drunk driving during some of the busiest travel times of the year, including this Labor Day holiday.

Hopatcong police say a man sped from a traffic stop, reaching 80 mph before crashing into a bridge on Landing Road in Roxbury before resisting arrest. Michael Mihalik, 40, of Highland Lakes, was leaving Hopatcong traveling on Lakeside Blvd. early Saturday after 1 a.m. when he crossed over the double yellow lines, police said.
